Interview Tips for Accountants: How to Stand Out and Land the Role

You’ve got the qualifications. You’ve polished your resume. Now comes the moment that makes even the most experienced professionals sweat a little: the interview.

We get it—accounting interviews aren’t always straightforward. They’re not just about what you know; they’re about how well you can communicate your thinking, explain your impact, and prove you’re more than just numbers on a page.

At Benchmark Search, we’ve helped thousands of accountants in Dallas-Fort Worth navigate interviews—from Staff Accountants to CFOs. And the truth is, even top-tier talent can stumble in the room if they don’t come prepared.

So whether you’re just starting your career or making your next big move, here’s what accounting candidates need to know to ace the interview in 2025.

1. Go Beyond the Resume—Tell the Story

Your resume lists your duties. Your interview? That’s where you bring the impact to life.

Be ready to answer:

• “Tell me about a time you found a financial discrepancy—what did you do?”

• “How have you helped improve a close process or reduce errors?”

• “Walk me through a challenging audit or reporting situation.”

This is your moment to show you’re not just an accountant—you’re a problem-solver. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to frame your stories clearly and with structure.

Pro Tip: Prepare 2–3 stories that highlight your value—quantify your impact whenever possible. “Saved $45K through vendor analysis” lands harder than “reviewed invoices.”

2. Brush Up on Tech (Even If It’s Not Your Favorite)

Even traditional accounting roles now involve tech fluency. From ERP systems

to Excel shortcuts and automation tools, interviewers want to know you can

adapt.

Know your tools. Be ready to talk about:

• What systems you’ve used (NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, etc.)

• How comfortable you are with Excel (pivot tables, lookups, macros)

• Any exposure to automation tools (like BlackLine or FloQast)

If you’re not familiar with what the company uses, say you’re eager to learn—

and give an example of how you picked up a new tool quickly in the past.

3. Ask Smart Questions (That Show You’re Thinking Long-Term)

When they ask, “Do you have any questions for us?”—don’t say no.

This is your chance to shift the tone of the conversation. Ask things like:

• “What does success look like in this role after six months?”

• “How does the team handle high-volume close periods?”

• “What opportunities exist for learning and development in this department?”

These questions show you’re already thinking like a team member—not just a candidate trying to get the job.

4. Watch for Cultural Cues (And Be Yourself)

Family-owned business? You’ll need to show discretion and loyalty. High-growth tech startup? They’ll want agility and speed. Enterprise-level corporation? Structure and process will matter.

If you’re interviewing through us, we’ll help you prepare for the tone, pace, and personality of the company. But in any case, pay 8

attention to the nonverbal signals during your conversation. And don’t pretend to be someone you’re not—authenticity beats polish every time.

5. Practice Makes Confidence (Not Perfection)

You don’t need to memorize a script. But you do need to practice out loud.

Grab a friend. Rehearse your story. Record yourself and listen back. Practice how

you’ll introduce yourself, how you’ll talk through your resume, and how you’ll

handle those tricky “what’s your biggest weakness?” questions.

The more you practice, the more natural—and confident—you’ll sound.

6. Follow Up (But Don’t Overdo It)

Always send a thank-you note. Keep it short, specific, and sincere:

• Thank them for their time

• Mention something specific you enjoyed about the conversation

• Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role

It’s a small gesture that leaves a lasting impression—and most candidates skip it.
